Get educated

I spent time in Johannesburg and I’ve travelled a bit. Australia, America, some European cities and South America. Plus a little stop over in Malaysia and Singapore.

And while I can vouch for the fact that alot of these places do alot of things better than us- mere mortals in Cape Town- like public transport, tv productions, heck maybe even politics etc. The one thing Cape Town does well…is coffee.

Australia and New Zealand can battle it out for who invented the Flat White, I don’t care. I just wanna say thanks! Cause it’s damn good!

We’ve taken it and made it our own. For those of you who don’t know what that is…it’s not a cappuccino for that’s for damn sure. Your coffee education probably begins and ends with instant coffee and maybe you’ve had an Nespresso pod coffee and you think you’re cool. Think again.

To explain the differences between Flat Whites, Capps and Lattes will take energy and time…which I’ll leave for another blogging session.

For now I’ll just tell you that coffee culture in Cape Town rocks. And what’s more exciting is that this city is all about sharing coffee knowledge with others who are still living in the dark ages of Ricoffy.

If you feel like challenging your coffee palate- check out my top 3 coffee spots:

  1. Truth Coffee Cult- by far the BEST place in CT. Check out their main cafe/restaurant in Buitenkant street. The coffee is great and the decor is funky. You won’t be disappointed.
Address: 36 Buitenkant St, Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town, 8000. Website: www.truthcoffee.com
  2. Tribe- situated in Woodstock it’s a cool coffee spot in the newly rejuvenated area just outside of the city centre that is becoming quite a hippy place to hang out. They roast their own beans and their blends are smooth. Address: The Woodstock Foundry, 160 Albert Rd, Woodstock, Cape Town, 7915. Website: www.tribecoffee.co.za
  3. Origin coffee in Hudson street in CT is another well known coffee gem. Coffee is certainly king here. And the baristas are eager to share their knowledge with you. Here you can choose your single origin beans, choose your preferred method of extraction and enjoy you coffee in a laid back setting. This is definitely a favourite of mine!Address: 28 Hudson St, Cape Town, 8001. Website:www.originroasting.co.za

Or you can spend time with someone who is a barista…

…like my coffee obsessed brother Taswell. Thanks Taz! When I’m in Jozi I go to his place and get him to make me my perfect drink- a Flat White. Which is also the name of his coffee business. But that’s another blog on its own.

Bottom line…Coffee is a real thing people. Good coffee may be hard to find but not in Cape Town. Get off your ass and go get some!
